Homemade Take 5 Bars: The Ultimate Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Caramel, and Pretzel Experience
There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you create your favorite treats right in your own kitchen. And when it comes to homemade candy bars, it truly doesn’t get much better than a scratch-made version of the iconic Take 5 bar. Imagine layers of rich milk chocolate, creamy peanut butter, crunchy pretzels, gooey caramel, and salty peanuts all coming together in one incredible bite. These bars aren’t just good; they’re an out-of-control, unbelievably delicious masterpiece that might just become your new favorite obsession.
The Irresistible Allure of Homemade Candy
For a long time, I tried to convince myself I was above candy. With all the delightful homemade desserts constantly emerging from my kitchen, I reasoned that I simply didn’t have the “calorie budget” to spare for store-bought sweets. I could easily claim a preference for my own baked goods, dismissing packaged candy as an inferior indulgence. But if I’m being completely honest, that wouldn’t capture the full truth. My sweet tooth, you see, is gloriously nondiscriminatory. When a craving hits, it hits hard, and sometimes, only a specific kind of sweet will do.
That undeniable truth hit me hard a few weeks ago during a family vacation. We were gathered around a table, engaged in lively card games, when a bowl of assorted candy made its rounds. Despite my usual restraint, the temptation was too great. I grabbed a snack-sized Take 5 bar, and halfway through that first perfect combination of flavors and textures, a thought crystallized: “This is absolutely incredible.” That immediate appreciation was quickly followed by an even more exciting revelation: “But I could make a homemade version that would be even better.” And that, my friends, is precisely what I set out to do.
Why Homemade Candy Bars Reign Supreme
Ever since I discovered the surprising ease of crafting homemade Snickers bars, my willpower has been in constant peril. It’s become my delightful loophole around any self-imposed “no candy” policies, much to the chagrin of my waistline. Yet, the joy and superior taste of homemade candy bars are unequivocally worth every moment spent in the kitchen. While they do require a bit of time and might dirty a few dishes, the final product far surpasses anything you can purchase from a wrapper. The freshness, the quality of ingredients, and the sheer satisfaction of creating such a decadent treat make that “little extra jiggle” entirely justified in my book.
These homemade Take 5 bars exemplify everything wonderful about DIY confectionery. With their five distinct and harmoniously blended layers—creamy peanut butter, salty pretzels, buttery caramel, crunchy peanuts, and smooth chocolate—they deliver a sweet and salty symphony that is incredibly addicting. Seriously, a fair warning: you will be tempted to devour the entire pan yourself. So, do yourself a favor and ensure you have plenty of friends, family, or eager co-workers nearby to help you share the delicious bounty!

Ingredients
Bottom Chocolate Layer:
- 1 ¼ cup milk chocolate chips (255 grams)
- ¼ cup smooth peanut butter (70 grams)
Peanut Butter & Pretzel Layers:
- ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature (113 grams)
- 1 cup smooth or crunchy peanut butter (240 grams)
- 2 cups powdered sugar (500 grams)
- 2 cups mini pretzels (65 grams)
Caramel & Peanut Layers:
- 14 oz bag caramels, unwrapped (400 grams)
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream (60 ml)
- 1 cup salted peanuts (140 grams)
Top Chocolate Layer:
- 1 ¼ cup milk chocolate chips (255 grams)
- ¼ cup smooth peanut butter (70 grams)
Instructions
- To make the bottom chocolate layer, set a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water (creating a double boiler). Melt the milk chocolate chips and peanut butter together, stirring continuously until the mixture is completely smooth. Remove the bowl from the heat and carefully spread this melted chocolate mixture evenly into a 9×13-inch baking pan that has been lined with parchment paper or greased foil. Place the pan in the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes, allowing the chocolate to set firmly.
- For the peanut butter layer, combine the softened unsalted butter, 1 cup of peanut butter (smooth or crunchy, depending on your preference), and powdered sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, or use a hand-held mixer. Beat on medium speed until the mixture is light, smooth, and creamy. Carefully spread this peanut butter mixture over the chilled bottom chocolate layer. Arrange the mini pretzels in a single, even layer over the peanut butter.
- To prepare the caramel layer, place the unwrapped caramels and heavy whipping cream in a small saucepan. Set the saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir frequently as the caramels melt and combine with the cream, forming a smooth, luscious caramel sauce. As soon as it’s smooth, immediately pour and spread the warm caramel evenly over the pretzel layer. While the caramel is still soft, sprinkle the salted peanuts generously over the top. Return the pan to the fridge to chill for another 30 minutes, allowing the caramel to firm up slightly.
- Finally, create the top chocolate layer using the same method as the bottom layer. Set a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water. Melt the remaining milk chocolate chips and peanut butter, stirring until completely smooth. Pour this melted chocolate mixture over the chilled layers in the pan, spreading it gently to cover everything evenly. Place the bars back into the fridge for at least 30 minutes, or until the top chocolate layer is fully set and firm.
- Once thoroughly chilled, remove the pan from the fridge. Use the parchment paper or foil overhangs to lift the entire block of candy bars out of the pan. Place it on a cutting board and slice into individual bars of your desired size. Note that these bars will soften if left at room temperature for extended periods. For best texture and to prevent melting, store any leftover homemade Take 5 bars in an airtight container in the fridge. Enjoy your decadent creation!

Tips for Perfect Homemade Take 5 Bars
Crafting the perfect homemade candy bar requires a little attention to detail. Here are some key tips to ensure your Take 5 bars turn out absolutely spectacular every time:
- Quality Ingredients Matter: Since there are only five core ingredients, the quality of each really shines through. Use good quality milk chocolate chips, a fresh and creamy peanut butter (natural or conventional, as long as it’s smooth), and sturdy pretzels that won’t get too soggy.
- Melting Chocolate Smoothly: Using a double boiler (a heatproof bowl set over simmering water) is the best way to melt chocolate and peanut butter. It provides gentle, indirect heat, preventing the chocolate from scorching or seizing. Stir constantly until completely smooth for the best consistency.
- Even Layers are Key: For that beautiful, distinct layered look and balanced taste, try to spread each layer as evenly as possible. A small offset spatula or the back of a spoon works wonders for spreading the chocolate and peanut butter layers.
- Chilling is Non-Negotiable: Don’t rush the chilling process between layers. Each layer needs to be firm before the next is added to prevent them from mixing. This ensures clean cuts and distinct textures in the final bar.
- Cutting Techniques: Once the bars are completely firm, use a large, sharp knife to cut them. For cleaner cuts, you can run your knife under hot water and wipe it dry between slices. This helps glide through the chocolate without cracking.
- Optimal Storage: Due to the various components, especially the chocolate and caramel, these bars are best stored in the refrigerator. This maintains their firm texture and prevents them from becoming too soft or melting. Keep them in an airtight container for up to a week (if they last that long!).
