Among the many sweet confections I whip up each December, the recipes that consistently draw my children into the culinary adventure are the true keepers. And when it comes to kid-approved holiday baking, these Rudolf brownie cookies reign supreme in our household! Their appeal is undeniable: they’re wonderfully rich, exceptionally fudgy, and boast an intense chocolate flavor that chocolate lovers will adore. Imagine a brownie in cookie form – dense, chewy, and bursting with cocoa goodness. We’re talking about a cookie batter that includes a generous whole pound of chocolate, ensuring every bite is a decadent experience. Now that’s a chocolate cookie I can truly get behind!
What makes these cookies even more special, and surprisingly simple, is their charming transformation into everyone’s favorite red-nosed reindeer. No complicated decorating skills are required here! All you need to magically turn these intensely chocolatey brownie cookies into a festive masterpiece are a few mini pretzels for antlers and some colorful M&M’s for Rudolf’s iconic red nose. With just these few additions, and a joyful sprinkle of holiday spirit, you’ll be amazed at how quickly and easily these cookies come to life. And voila! These charming and delectable treats are guaranteed to be the star of any holiday gathering, bringing smiles to faces young and old this holiday season. They’re perfect for Christmas parties, cookie exchanges, or simply enjoying with a cup of hot cocoa by the fireplace.

How to Make These Delightful Rudolf Brownie Cookies
The foundation of these festive delights is a classic “brownie cookie” recipe, a beloved hybrid that combines the best characteristics of both brownies and cookies. This means you get an exceptionally chocolaty experience with a soft, chewy center and those signature crackly edges that true brownie aficionados crave. These cookies are truly brownies in cookie form, offering a denser, richer texture than a typical chocolate chip cookie, yet still maintaining that delightful cookie shape and portability. Their deep cocoa flavor and moist interior make them irresistible on their own, but the fun truly begins when we add the holiday magic!
To transform these delicious chocolate disks into an adorable herd of reindeer, the process couldn’t be simpler: just add antlers and a bright red nose! The antlers are effortlessly created using mini pretzels. Their salty crunch also provides a wonderful contrast to the sweet, fudgy cookie. For Rudolf’s famous glowing nose, M&M’s are the perfect choice. You can use any kind of red M&M’s you prefer – classic milk chocolate, peanut, or even a festive holiday mint variety for an extra seasonal touch. If M&M’s aren’t available or you’re looking for an alternative, small red candies like Red Hots or even small dots of red icing can work just as well. The key is to add these decorations while the cookies are still warm from the oven, allowing them to gently adhere as the cookies cool. This simple decorating step is fantastic for involving children in the baking process, letting their creativity shine as they bring each reindeer to life.
Beyond their charming appearance, these Rudolf brownie cookies are a testament to how simple ingredients can create something extraordinary. The generous amount of chocolate ensures an intense flavor profile, making them a true indulgence. The minimal flour content contributes to their fudgy texture, steering them away from cakey and firmly into the dense, chewy brownie category. When baking, remember that the perfect brownie cookie has a slightly underbaked center, which results in that desirable moist and gooey texture once cooled. Keep an eye on the edges; they should be just set, while the centers might still look a little soft. This quick baking time is another reason these are such a fantastic holiday recipe, allowing you to whip up multiple batches without spending all day in the kitchen.
Serving these Rudolf brownie cookies is just as joyful as making them. Arrange them on a festive platter, and watch as they become an instant conversation starter and a favorite among guests. They also make wonderful edible gifts, beautifully packaged in clear bags with a holiday ribbon. Imagine the delight on a friend’s face receiving a batch of these homemade, characterful treats! Whether for a school party, a neighborhood potluck, or a quiet family evening, these cookies are versatile and guaranteed to spread cheer. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself baking them year after year, as they quickly become a cherished part of your family’s holiday traditions.

Essential Tools for This Recipe
While this recipe is designed to be straightforward, having a few key kitchen tools can make the process even smoother and more enjoyable. These aren’t necessarily specialized gadgets, but rather reliable staples that ensure consistent results and ease of preparation. For melting chocolate and butter, a double boiler or a sturdy, heatproof bowl that fits snugly over a saucepan of simmering water is indispensable. This gentle heating method prevents scorching and ensures a smooth, luscious chocolate mixture. An electric mixer, either hand-held or stand, will be your best friend for whipping the eggs and sugar to that crucial pale and thick consistency, which contributes to the cookies’ characteristic crackly tops. Quality baking sheets lined with parchment paper are essential for even baking and easy release, preventing your precious Rudolfs from sticking. And for perfectly uniform cookies, a cookie scoop (like the one I love) helps create consistent portion sizes, ensuring all your reindeer bake evenly. Having these tools ready before you begin will streamline your baking experience, allowing you to focus on the fun of creating these festive treats.

Ingredients
- 1 lb semi-sweet chopped chocolate or chips (455 grams)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (56 grams)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (300 grams)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup all-purpose flour (60 grams)
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 36 Mini pretzels
- 36 Red M&Ms
Instructions
-
In a double boiler, or a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, melt chocolate and butter until smooth. Remove from heat.
-
With an electric mixer, beat the eggs and sugar on high speed until pale and thick, about 2-3 minutes.
-
Fold chocolate mixture into the eggs until combined. Stir in vanilla.
-
Add salt, flour, and baking powder and mix just until no streaks of flour remain.
-
Pour batter into a shallow dish and freeze for 1 hour, or until firm.
-
Preheat oven to 350°F and line sheet pans with parchment paper.
-
Scoop brownie batter into generous tablespoonfuls (I like to use this cookie scoop) and roll into balls. Place on prepared sheet pans.
-
Bake until cookie edges are set and the centers are just starting to puff up, about 8-9 minutes.
-
As soon as cookies come out of the oven, place 2 pretzels on the top of each cookie for antlers and 1 red M&M in the center for a nose. Let cookies cool completely.
Notes
- Pretzels will soften over time and cookies are best the day they are baked.
